While Kamloopsians may have noticed some beautifully coloured salmon along the fences of local elementary schools, some might be intrigued to know the significance and meaning of the project.

During the first week of May, Parkcrest Elementary students and staff will delve into the rich, integrated, multi-agency educational project called Stream of Dreams. Lead by Teacher, Mrs. Jayne Latta and Stream of Dreams Murals Society, the elementary students will have the unique opportunity to work with local First Nations, and the Pacific Salmon Foundation to not only enrich their personal relationship with the environment, but to also educate the general public about protecting salmon habitat.

May 2-6th Parkcrest students and all staff will take part in workshops that educate the students about their local watershed and how to protect Tranquille Creek from stormdrain pollution. Each student will create a Dreamfish to be attached to the fence bordering Parkcrest School.

“The project will promote local salmon stewardship by helping students’ discover their local waterway and understand the importance of green spaces and rivers with healthy salmon populations in communities”.

The process of education and engagement empowers children and families with a voice for salmon protection. Students will also be learning about the significance salmon have to our First Nations culture. A celebration unveiling picnic will wrap up the project for staff, students, parents and Aboriginal guests.
